Wow, where has the time gone! We have been pretty rushed off our feet here at Bartley Glass for the past few months, so much so that I haven’t had a minute to sit down and process all that’s been going on or taken the time to write about it. But just recently we installed some bi-fold doors on a new property in Sutton Coldfield, and I couldn’t resist sharing them with you.

These bi-fold doors are actually a thing of real beauty (i know maybe not to you, but to me they are stunning) aesthetically pleasing, they have both form and superior function – which should be the case with most household fittings.

Most people in an effort to keep costs down often go down a bog standard alley or straight out of the box thinking it will be cheaper. The finish is never as good, and if you don’t come and speak to people like us you often are mislead and don’t know what your full options really are, and just how surprisingly reasonable they can be.

The door you see though, is just a little bit extra special. Mainly because the owners were thinking ahead and what will be most stylish and practical for years to come. For instance, the aluminium frame is dual powder coated, the outside is a forgiving grey which ages well and hides many sins, the inside is a clean and fresh white colour to match all of the other decor and to help keep the interior nice and bright.

As well as the doors opening to almost the full width of the aperture, allowing what will be the modern kitchen diner space to merge with the outdoors and create a large, stylish space, the bi-fold doors are also DDA compliant. Once the flooring is complete the base of the doors will be parallel with floor ensuring that there is no step up or over to get outside – a perfect option for people with young families or older relatives. Walk out or roll out whichever is your preferred (or required) method of travel straight outside. We call this a low line mobility threshold, and although slightly more costly, very worth it when you start to think about the wider needs of your family – the amount of times my heart has been in my mouth when my kids were little and running straight for the patio doors, I wish I had this sort of system then I can tell you!

Of course, having the bottom of the windows at ground level can also cause some issues, particularly if we have hard, relentless rain. To compensate for that the owners decided to install an aco drain running along the full width of the door. This underground drainage system will stop any build up of water at the windows edge ensuring the seal stays stronger for longer.

Finally the other special thing about these doors is the glass. On our recommendation the owner decided to install a blue tint self cleaning glass. The self cleaning bit of that is pretty self explanatory – I mean who wants to clean all the glass every few weeks!? But the blue tint is a brilliant method of helping to reduce the suns powerful rays. In fact, it actually reflects the harmful rays to ensure anything on the other side of the glass is protected – from your skin to the rugs on the floor.

That pretty much rounds up why these bi-fold doors are a thing of beauty in addition to being entirely practical. I do strongly recommend if you are considering replacing your patio doors with some bi-folds to come and have a chat with people like us, it does honestly cost less than you think and will serve you well in the long term. Just to give you some idea, the cost for supply and installation of 5 Door Aluminium Bi-Fold Doors, Dual colour Powder Coated is only £4962.00 inclusive of V.A.T!

That’s about all from me, for now. I am hoping on giving a little update shortly on all the other things we have been up to and I will have the second set of pictures from the job above, when we go back in August to install the atrium – yes the ATRIUM – expect a spectacular sight.
